An important challenge in the study of conjugated materials is to relate the properties of transient states underlying macroscopic material responses directly with intra- and intermolecular structure and dynamics. We present our efforts to illuminate structural properties and dynamics of excited states in conjugated organic and hybrid organic-inorganic materials as well as structure-dynamics relationships that underlie their photoresponsive behaviors (dynamics).  Experimentally we utilize time-resolved electronic spectroscopies in combination with femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy to interrogate variations in local structure and delocalization and to probe structural dynamics of material excitations. This talk will present studies with excited states in conjugated polymer materials demonstrating that ultrafast evolution in excited-state conformation and localization can be tracked through time-dependence in Raman frequencies and in mode-specific resonance enhancements.  This talk will also describe recent efforts aimed at interrogating charge and energy transfer mechanisms in hybrid organosilane materials and supramolecular assemblies of stacked oligomers.
