Inorganic chemistry is distinguished by the close interplay of molecular structure, electronic structure, spectroscopy, thermochemistry and reaction chemistry. This presentation will include selected topics from the authors laboratory that illustrate this interplay. The reactivity and structures of high valent oxo and nitrido compounds of groups 6-8 are strongly influenced by the limited number of d electrons, the importance of π bonding, and the strength of the metal-ligand multiple bonds. The oxygen atom transfer reactions characteristic of metal-oxo compounds will be contrasted with hydrogen atom transfer reactions that often involve formation of E–H bonds to ligands. Application of these principles to the reactivity of nanoscale metal oxide materials will also be discussed.
