We present the preliminary results of the development of an industrial process for the deposition of nano-sized TiO2 particles in its anastase form on ceramic tiles in El Salvador. TiO2 coatings are well-known for presenting a number of very beneficial properties including hidrophobicity and photo-catalytic behaviour. Under the irradiation of ultraviolet light (from the sunlight), TiO2 coated surfaces decompose the majority of organic pollutants into harmless carbon dioxide and water. The resulting self-sterilisation and air purification properties are being considered as key health benefits, especially for populations which are prone to a high probability of acquiring infectuous deseases. The project is being developed in El Salvador, within the frame of a local cooperation between ceramic tile industry and academia that is financialy supported by government of the Unites States of America. Its execution is organized through a well defined work breakdown strucure and corresponding schedule, with an initial duration of 18 months. Our presentation we will provide an overview of the project strucute, its execution plan, as well as preliminary SEM-documented results obtained with a specially developed coater prototype.
