For surface functionalization of noble metals, the archetypal technique is installing thiol based self-assembled monolayers (SAMs).  Thiol monolayers are particularly prevalent for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based sensing.  However, thiols have key limitations that limit their viability in long term applications and sensing in extreme conditions (such as highly acidic or basic media).  Recently, SAMs made from N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been shown to have superior stability compared to thiol based SAMs.  A key limitation for the development of NHC SAMs for SERS is a lack of straightforward SAM preparation.  We present the first steps towards utilizing this new ligand platform for SERS based detection.  Strategies for synthesis and characterization of bifunctional NHC-CO<sub>2</sub> adducts, which facilitate monolayer formation without stringent conditions, are described.  Initial results of unfunctionalized and functionalized ligands stability monitored by SERS are demonstrated.  Finally, preliminary applications towards detection with NHC SAMs are discussed.
