The challenges of urban water related to water pollution, and water shortage are discussed. The advances in oxidations with permanganate, ferrate and persulphate are summarized for the degradation of organic pollutants. The manganese oxides and iron oxides formed <i>in situ</i> are investigated for enhanced degradation of organic pollutants and removal of algae and heavy metals, as well as aiding the coagulation of surface waters. The effectiveness of ozone, permanganate and ferrate oxidation is compared with respect to the degradation of organic pollutants and control of algae and disinfection byproducts in water. The paper reviewed the advancement in advanced oxidation processes such as catalytic ozonation for enhanced degradation of refractory pollutants (pesticides, EDCs and pharmaceuticals) in aqueous solution in the presence of nanoparticles. The advanced reduction processes are also introduced for the enhanced degradation of halogenated organics. The advances in the modification of membrane with nanoparticles are also introduced to achieve high antifouling performances with ultralow pressure in the filtration of water and wastewater. Some cases of engineering applications are also introduced.
