The use of sterically bulky ligands is a common theme in transition metal catalysis for generating coordinatively unsaturated metal complexes; however, this strategy has not been fully explored for one of the more ubiquitous classes of ligands, β-diketones. Functionalization of β-diketone ligands with the bulky 2,6-dimesitylphenyl group has enabled isolation of complexes of the type M(acac)2Cl(L) (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe; L = THF, CH3CN), and prevents rearrangement to more common M(acac)3 complexes. The open coordination sites in these complexes serve as a platform to isolate and characterize the reactive intermediates in catalytic reaction mechanisms that employ M(acac)3 complexes as catalytic precursors.
