Flavonoids are privileged substructures in many bioactive natural products as well as pharmaceutical molecules. The replacement of the oxygen atom with a sulfur atom is common for the design and synthesis of analogues in order to improve bioactivities. The sulfur analogues of naturally existing flavonoids have been reported to exhibit bioactivities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antioxidant. A highly efficient synthesis of thioflavanones is developed via conjugate addition of arylzinc reagents to thiochromones using Rh(I) catalyst. Excellent chemical yields of 1,4-adduct can be achieved. This synthetic approach will provide a quick direct access to bioactive thioflavnones.
