With the ever-growing chemical and biological threats posed to our national security, the emergence of counter-measures against such threats remains paramount.  Perovskites offer new exciting avenues for use as chemical sensors for or decontamination of chemical warfare agents.  One particular and attractive perovskite is BaTiO<sub>3</sub> as this tertiary oxide can exhibit ferroelectricity, is a semi-conductor, has high permittivity, and has low dielectric loss.  BaZrO<sub>3</sub> shares similar properties with the exception of ferroelectricity.  We explored both dielectric materials to exploit changes in the electronic properties from the removal of toxic chemicals such as chemical warfare agent structural analogs.  In this talk, I will discuss how the structural and electronic properties of these materials are impacted upon toxic chemical exposure using infrared and impedance spectroscopies.
