Perylenemonoimides (PMIs) have particular interest as fluorescent probes due to their longer-wavelength emission, larger Stokes shift, and lower reduction potential as well as amenability to extend perylene core into terrylene, quaterrylene, and pentarylene structures. However, PMIs tend to aggregate and form non-fluorescent p-p stacks in aqueous solution. We have previously reported an approach to prevent aggregation of PMIs in aqueous solution by forming host-guest complexes with cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). In this presentation, we report the design and synthesis of a series of water-soluble 9-position substituted PMIs to tune the optical properties and the binding affinity of PMIs. The photophysical properties (e.g. absorption, fluorescence emission, quantum yield, and fluorescence decay) of these 9-position substituted PMIs have been investigated. We further investigated their binding ability with Cucurbit[8]uril.
