Metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) and a biomarker of DNA oxidative stress, droxy-2‘-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), were determined in 188 urine samples collected from pregnant women in Guangzhou, South China. The mean concentration (all creatinine corrected) of OH-PAHs ranged from 83 ng/g (3-hydroxyphenanthrene) to 1960 ng/g (2-hydroxynaphthalene), and of 8-OHdG was 17.8 μg/g, in all samples, respectively. Our results indicated that the exposure levels of PAHs in China were at moderate levels, similar to the developed countries. The exposure levels in pregnant women were changed at different trimesters, especially for 2-hydroxynaphthalene and 2-hydroxyphenanthrene. In addition, having a job during pregnancy will increase PAHs exposure. The exposures from traffic to work place or working environment were the susceptive sources for pregnant women who having a job. Further, we found that similar to PAHs exposure, positive relationships were found between levels of 8-OHdG and job status. From our results, it seems that oxidative stress is associated with PAHs exposure in pregnant women and having a job seems to aggravate the damage outcome. To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess relationship between PAHs exposure and 8-OHdG in pregnant women using multiple urinary OH-PAHs.
