An integrated gasification combined cycle with hydrogen selective membranes for CO2 capture was considered. The configuration of the process, which is composed four sections (oxygen, gasification, power, and CO2 capture islands), was proposed as reference from the European Benchmark Task Force and techno-economic assessment was conducted when membranes developed in CACHET-II project were applied in the CO2 capture island. In this study, the membrane in the CO2 capture island was replaced with another separation module where Pd-based highly-selective membrane to hydrogen developed by Korea Institute of Energy Research was used, while the other parts were maintained as reported. Then, cost analysis was conducted using the correlations available in the references and the reports by the department of energy. The hydrogen flux of the KIER-membrane has the hydrogen flux of approximately 328 mL/cm2/min at 400 °C and ΔP = 6.8 bar, and thus, the increased separation performance reduced the number of water gas shift reactors for almost complete conversion CO from three to two. In addition, total area of separation was significantly reduced compared to the reported ones. Those two contributions resulted in the reduction of the cost of CO2 avoided from 40.1 to 16.0 $/ton-CO2. In order to diminish the capture cost further, the configuration of CO2 capture island was varied; for example, both high- and low-temperature water gas shift reactors were used while the reported process was composed of HTS only, and heat exchanger network was optimized to recover as much heat energy from the process streams as possible. In such a way, the cost of CO2 avoided was curtailed as low as 14.0 $/ton-CO2. In conclusion, the development of advanced hydrogen selective membrane was shown to be one of key factors to reduce entire cost of CO2 capture process, and thus, the use of the KIER-membrane module and further optimization of the process configuration may accelerate the commercial application of a membrane based CO2 capture process.
