The phenomenon Luminescence rigidochromism has been reported in the literature since the pioneering work of M. Wrighton et al. in the 1970s on tricarbonyldiimine complexes with a general formula [Re(CO)3LX]. Wrighton and coworkers used conventional unipolar diimine ligands such as 2,2’-bypyridine or 1,1-phenanthroline, L, and halogens or simple solvent molecules as X. Here we report the systematic luminescence studies of rhenium(I) polyimine complexes with novel ambipolar ligands of the formula 4-[4,6-(3-R,4-R’,5-R”-pyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]-N,N-diethyl-benzenamine, L, where the R, R' and R'' are electron-withdrawing or donating groups, and highly bulky or aromatic groups, which are not commercially available. The experiments in this study cover several glass-forming hosts with various polarities and distinctive glass transition temperatures, Tg. Moreover, the analysis performed near their Tg using remarkable sensitivity (within 0.1 K) show smooth transitions and give an inside into the electronics regarding the luminescence rigidochromism phenomenon. Furthermore, the higher variety on the ligands’ functional groups show their effect on their luminescence rigidochromic behavior, their overall photophysical profile, and their preferable coordination arrangement including mono- and binuclear complexations. Finally, the microwave-assisted synthetic methodology used show the expected advantages of achieving cleaner and faster reactions compared with conventional heating methods.
