Neutron Imaging has been used extensively to understand water transport in low temperature PEM membrane fuel cells.  To a lesser extent it has also been used to look at lithium migration in lithium ion batteries as well.  This has all been aided by the vast improvements in neutron spatial resolution that have been made in the past 10 years, starting with 100 μm resolution and progressing to 10 μm resolution.  Currently the neutron imaging community is working towards achieving 1 μm spatial resolution with a combination of improvements to imaging detectors and through the development of a neutron microscope based on Wolter optics.  These improvements to spatial resolution are required to visualize water transport at the membrane electrode interface in PEM fuel cells as well as lithium transport in commercially viable battery system.  Here we will focus on the progress made toward achieving these goals and show new fuel cell results demonstrating how improvements to image spatial resolution are extending the areas of fuel cell membrane research and future lithium ion battery research.<br/>
