The chemical garden chemistry was used to generate a library of polysaccharide incorporated tubules. These biomimetic tubules were prepared by the dissolution of polysaccharides into saturated hot water glass and then, seeding with calcium chloride. The scaffolds were characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to identify inorganic crystalline phases in the scaffolds along with a band corresponding to amorphous polysaccharides. Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS) analysis and Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the incorporation of polysaccharide in the constructs. The surface chemistry of the scaffolds was programmed to introduce cue molecules which promote the adhesion of test marine and mammalian cell lines. The attachment and long term viability of cells on the final supracellular assemblies was characterized via advanced microscopy. This technology has tremendous potential for applications including 3D marine/mammalian cell culture and for biomolecular material development.
