Metal–organic frameworks are a class of compounds composed of metal ions linked via organic bridging ligands to form three-dimensional porous networks. The exceptional ability of these materials to adopt ordered structures with distinct pore sizes and chemical environments provides an innovative route towards the synthesis and stabilization of inorganic clusters within a three-dimensional support. In analogy to how polydentate ligands can serve as molecular scaffolds to form well-defined multinuclear complexes, metal–organic frameworks furnished with coordinating groups can facilitate the nucleation, growth, and confinement of discrete inorganic clusters. Crystallographic characterization by X-ray diffraction provides insight on the structure and mechanism of formation of these clusters. While magnetic meausrements demonstrate that these species exhbits properties distinct from the bulk solids they are derived from.<br/>
