Photodynamic therapy has been extensively studied recently owing to its effectiveness, non-invasion, and site-controllability. However, most of the photosensitizers that generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) can only be excited by UV and visible light, hindering their application in deep tumor therapy. Here we developed a Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based nanosystem that can produce ROS with near-infrared light, by taking the advantage of the overlap band between the the emission of upconversion nanoparticle and the excitation of the photosensitizer methylene blue. Upconversion nanoparticle are modified with DNA aptamer which can carry methylene blue, as well as functionalize the particle with targeting ability. This nanosystem has showed selective phototoxicity toward the target cancer cells.<br/>
