Catalytic transformations of C–H bonds are now common. This was not always the case. Building from our initial discovery of a thermal, catalytic coupling of a borane and benzene in 1999, highly active catalysts with unique regioselectivities for aromatic and heteroaromatic C–H bonds have been developed by a number of research groups. This talk will highlight contributions from my group’s collaborations, particularly those with Rob Maleczka’s group, on C–H borylation. Interesting mechanistic aspects of C–H borylations will be discussed in the context of identifying and developing directing effects to add to the synthetic toolbox. In addition, recent approaches to saturated, and partially saturated, cyclic and heterocyclic boronate esters will be presented.
