Magnetic refrigeration has the potential to exceed the efficiency of conventional gas compression refrigeration. Based on the magnetocaloric effect, cooling is achieved by cycling the materials between different states of magnetization that correspond to states of high and low entropy. Mass adoption of this promising technology requires low cost materials that exhibit high cooling efficiency. We employ microwave synthesis coupled with new DFT-based proxies for screening magnetocaloric materials in the TiNiSi structure type. The screened materials are prepared using a rapid assisted microwave approach, and the magnetocaloric properties characterized using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The links between structure, composition, and magnetocaloric properties are elucidated.
