Properties of the polyphosphazene, [RR'PN]<sub>n</sub>, can be selected for specific purposes by post polymerization modification of the side groups, R and R', which are attached to the polymeric backbone via phosphorus carbon bonds. Poly(methylphenylphosphazene) (PMPP) is among the most extensively studied of these alkyl/aryl polyphosphazenes, which are synthesized by condensation polymerization of N-silylphosphoranimines. PMPP is most easily modified by deprotonation of the methyl group followed by substitution of electrophiles. This ongoing work explores the use of this method to substitute antibacterial groups onto the polyphosphazene backbone so that they may be used as infection-preventing films for biomedical applications.
