Carbon monoxide (CO) has been shown to play a vital role as a low concentration cell-signaling molecule in living organisms. Although it is not yet understood how carbon monoxide signals cells, it is known that it increases the rate of tissue healing and aids in countering surgical transplant rejections. The Photochemical Reaction of Na2[µ-SCH2CH2COO-Fe(CO)3]2 results in the release of carbon monoxide. This molecule is categorized as a photoCORM; a photo activated carbon monoxide releasing molecules. PhotoCORMs are candidates for localized biomedical applications, because of their potential inertness until photo activated. After the molecule has been activated it will release carbon monoxide in the targeted localized area to help aid in healing. It is our goal to determine how many CO ligands are released upon light irradiation of Na2[µ-SCH2CH2COO-Fe(CO)3]2 and investigate the cellular viability of both the parent and photoproduct. Our preliminary data of both cellular viability and quantum yield seems to indicate that the diiron compound is a good candidate as a biomedical photoCORM. We have successfully synthesized the diiron compound and have started preliminary studies on cellular viability and quantum yields. Results suggests that the cell viability studies of our compound toward jurkat cells from 1 to 40 µmol/L did not lead to any observable cytotoxicity over a 24-hour period. Our preliminary data also suggests that our quantum yield is approximately 0.041. Our research will be focused primarily on the photochemical wavelength dependency, solvent dependency, reaction rates, and cellular viability.
