The reaction of Pt(IPr)(SnBu3 t)(H), 1 [IPr = N-heterocylic carbene ligand N,N ′-bis-(2,6-(diisopropyl) phenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene] with Ru5(μ5-C)(CO)15, 2, in 1.2:1 (and 2.2:1) ratio in benzene solvent at 85°C yielded two new octahedral monoplatinum–pentaruthenium cluster complexes PtRu5(IPr)(CO)15(μ6-C), 3, PtRu5(IPr)(CO)14(H)2(μ6-C), 4 and the diplatinum–pentaruthenium cluster complex Pt2Ru5(IPr)2(CO)15(μ6-C), 5. Complex 3 reacts with H2 at room temperature to give complex 4. Compound 5 exhibits dynamical activity in solution where the two Pt(IPr) groups are exchanging rapidly. In hexane solvent at refluxing temperature, the treatment of the octahedral cluster complex of Ru6(μ6-C)(CO)17,6 with Pt(IPr)(SnBut3)(H), 1 in 1:1 (and 1:3) ratio yielded two new bimetallic Ru-Pt cluster complexes PtRu6(IPr)2(CO)17(μ6-C), 7, Pt2Ru6(IPr)2(CO)17(μ6-C), 8. In heptane reflux, excess SnBut3 (H),9,converted 8 to 7 and also produced 1. It is shown that 9 reacted with one Pt(IPr) cap from 8, (the bis-Pt(IPr) adduct) producing 7, (the mono- Pt(IPr) adduct) and 1. The structures and characterization methods of these complexes will be presented.
