Over the past few years we have shown that chemically exfoliated 2D MoS2 and WS2 are excellent materials for electrochemical applications such as energy storage and electrocatalysis. We recently reported that chemically exfoliated and restacked 1T phase of MoS2 exhibits exceptionally high volumetric capacitance in both aqueous and organic electrolytes. Such high charge storage behavior has been attributed to intrinsic hydrophillicity, high electrical conductivity (100S/cm), and the dynamic expansion of the 1T phase MoS2 electrodes due to intercalation of cations. We have also demonstrated that the dynamic expansion and contraction of 1T phase MoS2 nanosheet electrodes can generate exceptionally large mechanical forces that are capable of lifting masses that are &gt; 100 times heavier than the electrode weight over several millimetres. Furthermore, the MoS2 electrodes are able to withstand strains of nearly 1%, operate at frequencies of up to 1Hz with energy density of 10 – 100 kJ-m-3. The excellent actuation performance can be attributed to high conductivity of metallic 1T phase of MoS2, high elastic modulus of MoS2 layers and fast proton insertion into layered structure.
