The Ouachita Baptist University ACS chapter hosts a variety of events designed to target both the community and our chapter’s members. The main focus of our community outreach has been to share a love of science with the children in Arkadelphia as well as our fellow students. This year, we have started a new tutoring program as means to increase our universities chemistry retention rate. We offer tutoring in General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses—all provided by qualified ACS members. Another new program we have implemented this year is the Chemistry of Taste: Canned Food Drive. We collected canned goods and non-perishable food items in exchange for edible berries that change taste receptor response and a Thanksgiving meal.<br/>We also host events that target our chapter’s members. Examples of events include attending lectures and webinars, hosting grant proposal workshops, and hosting demo nights for students. To give our members an opportunity to showcase their research and to learn about other advances in the field of chemistry, we allow them to present at various regional conferences. Over 40 presentations were made by our students at various meetings including INBRE, NCUR, Alpha Chi, Southwest IDeA, the Central Arkansas Research Symposium and Posters at the Capitol. We also attend the spring national ACS meetings. In March of 2016, the department took twelve (12) students to the national ACS meeting in San Diego, CA. Four of the students earned Chemistry Ambassador "Speak Simply" awards during the Undergraduate Research Poster Session. Presenters were challenged to avoid scientific jargon and talk simply, but compellingly, about their research. In the four years that the ACS has been conducting the "Speak Simply" contest at the national meeting, Ouachita students have garnered 18 of the 60 awards (30%), by far the most of any one institution.
