The time lag between the first and second semesters of organic chemistry works against students retaining the fundamental concepts in Organic I that are needed for success in Organic II.  These concepts include:  bonding, acid-base chemistry, intermolecular forces, stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms, synthesis, and spectroscopy.  We designed a tool to get baseline data for our students at the end of Organic I and then compared these with results for the same students as they began Organic II.  We will share the tool we used, the results we obtained, and our plans to address issues related to poor student retention.<br/>
