The Chemistry Department at Montgomery College is focused on implementing strategies to help students successfully navigate and complete the chemistry curriculum and transfer to a four-year program. Students at two-year colleges are often looking for opportunities to gain experience outside of the traditional classroom and to engage in independent research projects. The Chemistry Department has adapted an honors course module, designed to pair honors enriched coursework with a standard class section, into an opportunity to introduce students to undergraduate research. This model has been successfully integrated into general chemistry and organic chemistry courses. The long term goal of introducing this research-based honors module is to increase student success in completion and transferability and to expose students to scientific research. Come and hear about example student projects as well as the benefits of the experience to the students and strategies for the sustainability of the model.
