CO2 fixation and utilization have received much attention from both a synthetic and industrial perspective. A promising example for CO2 utilization and fixation is the direct synthesis of cyclic carbonates via a one-pot method using olefins and CO2. The advantages of this method are to minimize the use of additives and to avoid unnecessary steps that result in product loss during the workup process. However, there are few reports for this normally due to the low activity of CO2. Using a combination of metal oxides and ionic bifunctional catalysts tethered onto a support to could enhance the efficiency and selectivity for this one pot synthesis. In particular, we report the synthesis of inexpensive Mo and W based catalysts with hydroxy-ammonium salts grafted to the surface. The effect of the acidity of the support on the efficiency and selectivity of the process is characterized using ICP-MS, BET, XRD, and XPS. The catalytic activities and mechanism will be presented for a direct conversion of cyclohexene to cyclohexene carbonate.
