At the University of St. Thomas, we reach out to gain new members by promoting the club at orientation and club fair events. St. Thomas is a private university, so the ACS members become a close-knit community and we keep the students up to date and active by holding regular meetings and offering a variety of volunteer opportunities. The St. Thomas student chapter of ACS has collaborated with other science clubs on campus, as well as other student ACS chapters in the area and the Greater Houston Area ACS chapter as well. This has enabled our club to interact with, not only ACS members in similar positions, but older ACS members already working in the chemistry field. Examples of the volunteer events we have partaken in include the Adopt-a-Beach Galveston clean up and National Chemistry Week at the local children's museum. We also perform chemistry demonstrations annually at a school to promote the STEM field. Social events include our annual lab coat tie-dye event, and we plan on introducing a new event to promote ACS webinars in the form of an ice cream social. Many fundraisers are in place to ensure the University of St. Thomas is able to send many students to share their research at the national conference this year.
