The Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) enables access to space for utilization of the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory (ISS NL) for research and technology development that benefits Earth. Since the designation of the ISS National Lab by the US Congress in 2005, research capabilities in space have expanded to include both NASA and commercial facilities on the ISS NL that support not only fundamental research and technology development but also enable the exploration of on-orbit advanced manufacturing for larger scale synthesis in space. Synthesis in low Earth orbit is the next great opportunity for translational innovation in the limitless expanse of space. Free of the confounding effects of gravity-induced convection, sedimentation, shear force, and hydrostatic pressure on Earth, microgravity provides a new vantage point from which to observe biological and physical processes then adapt the knowledge gained to forge new pathways of investigation and application. The unique environment of microgravity fuels innovation in diverse areas of discovery research and translational medicine ranging from macromolecular crystal growth for drug discovery through improved physical models of proteins and other macromolecules; monoclonal antibody production and stem cell proliferation; microphysiological systems and tissue-on-chip platforms for high throughput drug screening and personalized medicine; tissue engineering and organ bioengineering applications for regenerative medicine; and the development of 3D printing and additive manufacturing platforms for material science and life science applications including the on-orbit production of biological tissues and organs.
