The development of novel water-soluble chemical sensors that can function in aqueous medium is an important problem in the field of sensors. We will report the synthesis of platinum (II) complex, Pt(BPS)(CN)2 (BPS = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline disulfonic acid disodium salt), from Pt(BPS)Cl2 and report the characterization by UV-VIS, 1H NMR, and IR spectroscopies. The Pt(BPS)(CN)2 complex exhibits absorption bands at 280 nm and 370 nm that corresponds to a π --&gt; π* charge-transfer transition and MLCT transition, respectively. Excitation into the MLCT band yields a bright orange emission both in the solid and in aqueous solution. Determining suitable sensors for detecting harmful inorganic chemicals, such as mercury (II) and other metal ions, is important for environment monitoring and in-situ biological sensors. We will report the viability of Pt(BPS)(CN)2 as a luminescence sensor for Hg2+ and other metal ions. Supramolecular interactions of Pt(BPS)(CN)2 with cucurbiturils, a macrocycle molecule with the ability to bind hydrophobic molecules, will be explored.
