The Liver X Receptors (LXRs) are nuclear receptors whose main function is the regulation of cellular and serum cholesterol levels. These receptors have been shown to be of potential use as drug targets for several diseases, including atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer (breast and prostate). There is a strong drive to develop novel LXR ligands that serve as both agonist and antagonist to these receptors. In this work we use modern computational chemistry tools to develop novel ligands that bind strongly to LXR. Several of these ligands have been synthesized in the laboratory and have undergone bioassay studies, showing good LXR activity.
