The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) is a research-based inquiry method for laboratory instruction that includes the opportunity for student questioning, implementation of procedures, reflection on results, and development of systematic knowledge. This paper will describe how the SWH has been used in instruction with the 6th edition of the ACS’ Chemistry in the Community (ChemCom) textbook. Recent work to align instruction using ChemCom and the SWH with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and also with classes using the International Baccalaureate's Middle Years Programme (MYP) will be will be discussed. This includes rubrics for student work that reflect the goals of student learning of Disciplinary Core Ideas and the Science and Engineering Practices.
