As part of a larger research project in which protic ionic liquid monomers were synthesized in order to produce crosslinked polymer via free-radical polymerization, HNMR analysis was performed in order to confirm successful synthesis of these monomers.  This research provided participating students with opportunities to apply HNMR theory learned in undergraduate Organic Chemistry into a novel situation, as well as correspond HNMR results to other spectroscopic data.  This project demonstrates how an affordable, benchtop HNMR that is primarily used for teaching can also be successfully incorporated into undergraduate research.  This project also demonstrates ways in which HNMR analysis of reactants and products can be incorporated into undergraduate laboratory courses such as Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, and Environmental Chemistry.
