Dendrimers are highly branched macromolecules with several sites through which attachment to another molecule can occur (multivalency). Synthesis of dendrimers begins with a core to which linkers can be added to increase the number of ends. Functional groups can then be appended to these ends to allow for diverse chemical reactivity. Glycodendrimers result when sugars are added to the ends of dendrimers. The multi-step synthesis of hexavalent cellobiose and lactose terminated glycodendrimers started with the formation of a nitrile linker (85% yield). The nitrile end was next reduced and then protected (62% yield). Through a series of reactions, cellobiose or lactose were added to the reactive end yielding sugar-terminated linkers. Concurrently, a hexavalent core was made by adding linkers to a commercially available tris 2-(aminoethyl) amine core.  Finally, the hexavalent core and sugar linkers were coupled together, yielding the desired cellobiose and lactose terminated glycodendrimers.<br/> <br/>
