Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are popular nicotine-delivery products that aerosolize a propylene glycol-glycerin-based liquid (e-liquid) as an alternate to traditional tobacco combustion. E-liquids are available across the globe with a plethora unique flavors and constituent combinations and continue to experience increasing popularity. Our research focuses on a comparison of different methods for the capture of EC emissions for analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We tested filter pad and impinger emission capture methods and found several characteristic EC and flavoring-related compounds in emissions of ECs. We present a comparison of differences between the two capture methods on the GC-MS results. Several identified compounds were also found in previous studies of the e-liquids, but some showed up only in the EC emissions. The increasing popularity and variety of ECs available to consumers warrants a reliable method for emission capture for the reliable analyses of EC emissions.
