Burkholderia cenocepacia is a bacterium that causes fatal infections in cystic fibrosis patients. The bacterium is highly impermeable due to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) molecules on the outer membrane (OM). In E. coli, LPS molecules are shuttled to the OM by the lipopolysaccharide transport (Lpt) pathway. A homologous pathway exists in B. cenocepacia, with the BCAL0894 gene encoding a specific Lpt protein, LptD. Our research group aims to introduce a mutant BCAL0894 protein to B. cenocepacia via plasmid and test for increased membrane permeability.
