Text has evolved from the written, to the printed, to the digital word. Today’s incoming college students are truly digital native in the sense that they never saw a world without digital text, and yet the typical textbook in today’s classroom is printed. The papers in the three sessions of this symposium have sought to look at the role of the textbook from historical, contemporary and future perspectives, with the hope of gaining insight into the role of the textbook in the evolving modern chemistry classroom. This panel seeks to provide an opportunity to share thoughts and gain understanding on the role of the modern textbook in the chemistry classroom with panelists who have knowledge of the past, experience with the present, and visions of the future.
