Ciprofloxacin, a photosensitive drug, induces an inflammatory response under radiation exposure. Currently, there are no effective techniques for predicting photosensitivity of photoactive substances. All photosensitizers pass through an excited state before becoming photoactive reagents, which causes photosensitive reactions in humans. We suspect that there is a difference between the ground state and the excited state of a photosensitive molecule. Since, the dipole moment represents the electronic geometry of the molecule, it can be used to characterize the difference in each electronic state. Thus, we hypothesize that the change in dipole moment between the ground state and the excited state can be correlated with the photosensitivity of the molecule. The change in dipole moment of ciprofloxacin under UV-excitation was determined via the Stokes shift analysis method by using solvents with varying polarity. The experimental change in dipole moment was compared to the theoretical value that was calculated in Gaussian. Ciprofloxacin’s change in dipole moment can be compared with the change in dipole moment of other photosensitive compounds in order to test our hypothesis.
