Sialic acid is a type of carbohydrate that is used in many biological purposes. The most abundant type of sialic acid that is found in biological systems is N-acetyl neuraminic acid, which might act as mediator for pathogen attack, as expressed at the terminal position of glycoconjugates. Typical example of viral infection facilitated by sialic acid is the binding of influenza virus as well as its release from the infected cell. As important therapeutic target, the 2,3 dehydroderivative of sialic acid and its structural modifications have been an important synthetic goal. Herein we report the synthesis of several 2,3 dehydroderivatives bearing different substituents at C-4.
