The authors believe that for too long the field of study of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) were considered too challenging for students who were blind and visually impaired. These negative attitudes have come from educators, professionals in the field and most importantly from blind individuals themselves. We believe that with the training of alternative techniques of blindness, adaptive equipment, adult role models who are blind and visually impaired and most of all, opportunity, we can progress forward with students believing that careers in chemistry, biology, physics and all related STEM fields will be obtainable for students who happen to be blind.<br/>In 2010 the National Federation of the Blind of Michigan began a summer science program endeavoring to change these attitudes and overcome challenges of educating students who were blind and visually impaired. We have partnered with various organizations, but for the last three years we have presented Sensational Adventures in Summer Science in partnership with the University of Michigan-Dearborn. It has been our goal to present alternative methods for blind and visually impaired students to engage fully in their chemistry, biology and other classes offering STEM education.<br/>In this presentation we would like to share our successes as well as our continuing endeavors to make the STEM field of study accessible and available for students who are blind and visually impaired.
