The first semester of the organic chemistry laboratory introduces many new techniques and spectroscopic analyses. This often is overwhelming to students. To help mitigate this apprehension and improve student’s comfort with laboratory work, a number of active learning techniques have been implemented. The use of spectroscopy software has allowed for student’s to analyze their own data, increasing both understanding and ownership. Each lab is also supplemented with online pre-lab videos, highlighting glassware set-ups, techniques, and instrument instructions. A lab practical is used to evaluate students on an individual basis on their grasp and understanding of the techniques and skills learned. Finally, these implementations have greatly assisted the adjunct laboratory instructors creating a consistent learning experience for all students.
