Benthic trophic transfer of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) from clamworm (Perinereis aibuhitensis) to juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) was investigated. TiO2 NPs mainly accumulated in the lower-digestive tract of clamworms after exposure. TiO2 NPs could transfer from clamworms to juvenile turbots, and the accumulation of TiO2 NPs in juvenile turbots increased with increasing Ti contents in clamworms during the dietary exposure. However, biomagnification (BMFs, 0.30-0.33) of TiO2 NPs was not observed. For both dietary and waterborne exposure, gill, intestine and stomach of juvenile turbots had the highest TiO2 NPs accumulation, following by skin, liver, and muscle. During dietary exposure, abnormal symptoms of liver and spleen were observed, and the growth of turbots was significantly reduced. In addition, both dietary (50 and 100 mg/L TiO2 NPs-treated clamworms) and waterborne (100 mg/L TiO2 NPs) exposures caused significantly lower protein and higher lipid contents, suggesting potential reduction in turbot nutritional quality and value.
