Palladium catalyzes the insertion of carbene groups derived from α-aryl-α-diazoesters into the N-H bonds of substituted indoles and carbazoles. Good yields up to 99% and high levels of enantioselection are achieved using 5 mol% (PhCN)<sub>2</sub>PdCl<sub>2</sub>. The reaction provides ready access to bioactive carbazoles avoiding the use of the Fischer indole synthesis. The reaction is also effective with phenoxazines.
