Using unenriched industrial titanyl sulfate solution as raw material, rutile TiO2 white pigment was prepared via short sulfate process, and the effects of calcining time at high temperature on the structure and pigment properties were investigated. The samples were characterized by TGA-DSC, XRD, particle size distribution test, SEM and pigment properties test. Calcining conditions had great effects on the crystal structure, crystallite size, particle size and its distribution, morphology, as well as pigment properties of the rutile TiO2 white pigment. High temperature duration time increased the phase transformation from anatase to rutile, crystallite size, average particle size, as well as crystal aggregation and agglomeration. The optimized calcining time duration at 880 0C was of 30 min, with rutile phase content of 97.0%, TCS index of 1840, and relative whiteness index of 100.47%.
