During my summer research experience in Germany, I had the opportunity to visit several European cities that had been completely destroyed during World War II. So I was able to see first-hand the consequences that global decisions can have and why global scientific collaboration is more critical than ever before. My research experience made it obvious that many of the dilemmas that we face like the need for new potent antibiotics are similar around the globe.  With the efforts of many international scientists, cystobactamides are being used to combat this issue. Cystobactamides may hold the key to filling a void in medical resources, but they cannot be isolated in a large enough amount to be used in the medical field. In order to solve this issue, the complete synthesis of cystobactamide 861-2 has been developed and optimized to make this compound in high enough yields to complete all of the necessary tests. I was able to optimize one step of this synthesis to increase the yield from 35% to 56%. This increase in yield was made in the third step of the reaction increasing the overall yield by 20%. My experience was an unforgettable one and as we move towards a more global scientific community, that we will be able to accomplish worldwide advances for the world’s population!
