Fluorinated gases and volatile liquids are of great relevance to the fields of energy, environment, and medicine. In particular, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) are useful coolants, while fluorinaed anesthetics constitute the bulk of inhalation anesthetics currently used in the clinic. All of these, however, are potent greenhouse gases, with global warming potentials(GWPs) hundreds or thousands of times higher than carbon dioxide. During the past two years, we have developed several novel and extensively fluorinated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and fluorinated porous molecular crystals. These porous materials can bind fluorinated gases with weight capacities of 225 wt%, and show piezochromic response to analyte entry into their pores. Porous molecular crystals formed from extensively fluorinated pyrazoles are a particularly intriguing structurally: they are held together through a combination of hydrogen bonding and [π…π] stacking, and this synergy of supramolecular interactions results in a remarkably robust material. This presentation will highlight their structures, synthetic challenges and opportunities in their production, and their applications.
