Business decisions are only as good as the information upon which they are based, and information acquisition must be weighed against cost, time and complexity of a project. Nowhere is this more critical than in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. For IP projects that require biological sequence data, multiple resources must be consulted to obtain the most comprehensive information possible. The wording of patent claims will impact: (1) whether the sequence gets into a database; (2) how the sequence is indexed; and (3) how a sequence search should be conducted. For a comprehensive biosequence patent search, technical knowledge of the science is needed, but also in-depth knowledge and experience of biosequence patent databases and searching are critical for a comprehensive search.<br/><br/>This presentation will discuss examples of sequences in patent claims, history of patent office rules for sequences in claims, and considerations for which search algorithms may need to be used to account for these issues.
