The use of visible light in cross coupling reactions has increased dramatically during the last years and has expanded the scope of substrates used to alkyl derivatives such as alkyl halides, alkyl trifluoroborates and alkyl carboxylic acids. Traditionally, an aryl (pseudo)-halide has been used as the electrophilic coupling partner in transition metal-based cross couplings and the use of alkyl halides has been restricted due to the risk of beta-elimination from the alkyl metal-complex formed after the initial oxidative addition. The use of a photocatalyst and visible light circumvents this problem via a generation of an alkyl radical.<br/>Within our research programme, we have a long standing interest in carbonylation reactions using molybdenum hexacarbonyl as a solid carbon monoxide (CO) source. We therefore sought to implement the use of visible light and photocatalysis in the synthesis of aryl alkyl ketones from aryl boronic acids and alkyl halides, using a solid CO source.
