We have recently begun exploring the photochemistry of N,N’- diamidocarbenes (DAC) due to its unique electronic properties. In the presence of light (380 nm), the DAC ligand gives a net insertion/ring expansion (Buchner reaction) into aromatic solvents, aryl halides and pyridine. Which effects the dearomatization of aromatic solvents, aryl halides and pyridine. This reaction is unique to the DAC ligand, and other carbenes including imidazol-2-ylidenes and cyclic alkyl amino carbenes (CAACs) do not participate in this photochemistry. A series N,N’-diamidocarbene-cycloheptatriene derivatives (Ar = C6H6, C6H5F, C6H5Cl, C6CH5Br, C5H5N, etc.) have been synthesized photochemically. This new photochemical reaction allows a high-yielding reaction to versatile building blocks for chemical synthesis.
