As reported by Huynh and co-workers, condensation of 2,3-butanedione and 4-tert-butylaniline results in the formation of a para-tert-butylphenyl substituted alpha-diimine ligand (4tBuDI). Similarly, the condensation of acenaphthenequinone and 4-tert-butylaniline resulted in a new para-tert-butylphenyl substituted bis(imino) acenaphthene ligand (4tbuBIAN) that has been characterized using NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, melting point analysis, and X-ray crystallography. New iron dibromide complexes were isolated upon mixing these ligands with iron dibromide, resulting in the formation of the corresponding iron precatalysts 4tBuDIFeBr2 and 4tBuBIANFeBr2. These precatalysts have been characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the connectivity for the 4tBuDIFeBr2 precatalyst has been confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Preliminary catalytic hydrosilylation activity upon reduction of these precatalysts is currently under investigation.
