We report silver based cationic coordination polymers with two mixed organic linkers directing the structure. These coordination networks are very promising as multifunctional luminescent materials due to their rich physiochemical properties. Two new Ag(I) coordination polymers, [Ag(C8H6N2)Na2(O3SCH2CH2SO3)0.5] (SLUG-37) and [Ag(C8H6N2) (O3SCH2CH2SO3)0.5.H2O] (SLUG-38) have been solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction and followed by scanning electron microscopy. The crystals consist of 1-D Ag cationic chains arranged into layers, with alkane disulfonate anions residing in the interlamellar space. Both compounds are isostructural, with only differences in their charge balancing molecules. The materials could be synthesized by not only hydrothermal condition but reflux and room temperature conditions, with higher yield. They display excellent thermal stability to 350 °C as evidenced by thermogravimetric analysis and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction. The luminescent behavior of both coordination polymers show excellent sensitivity towards silver which makes it attractive as a luminescence sensor.
